Arbroath rail repairs could see section of old A92 brought back into service

A section of the A92 at Arbroath will close over the Christmas weekend to allow repair work on a rail bridge.

Network Rail and its contractor will renew the bridge deck over the Kelly Burn (Elliot Water) on the main east coast rail line at the southern end of Arbroath.

The bridge is subject to a weekly structural monitoring regime as a result of its poor condition. Network Rail says the works are essential and it is proposing they should be conducted over Christmas. The plan is to close the A92 section for 72 hours from 6am on Christmas Eve.

The former A92 carriageway (pictured above) would be reopened to divert traffic from the roundabout at Elliot to the point at which the current A92 alignment ties in with the former alignment of the road.

Angus Council infrastructure services director Eric Lowson is warning the closure could go on longer than expected due to the weather.

”Given that two-way flow of traffic is to be maintained along the former A92 alignment this could be accommodated,” he said. ”All works and costs associated with the closure, reopening of the old A92 to road traffic temporarily, removal and re-erection of safety fences and reinstatement would be a matter for Network Rail and their contractor.”

Network Rail will carry out consultation with affected parties, neighbours and residents.
