Angus man admits attacking mother and police officer

An Arbroath man admitted carrying out a drunken attack on his mother then assaulting a police officer, Forfar Sheriff Court heard yesterday.

Floyd John Allan, 21, of Leonard Street, carried out the assaults on May 26 last year after a drinking session with his mother and her friend.

Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said the trio had been drinking in several pubs in Arbroath before returning to Wendy Allen’s home in Guthrie Street, Friockheim.

“There Allan started to bang his head off the living-room window,” she said.

“His mother and her friend made efforts to calm him down but he turned over a table, punched his mother on the face and grabbed her throat, causing them to fall to the ground.

“The friend was able to wrestle Allan off his mother. He then picked up a brush and started trying to smash a kitchen window.

“He then lunged at his mother a second time. She managed to get away and call the police.”

When police arrived they found Allan lying on the floor being restrained by his mother’s friend.

“Allan then lunged at a police sergeant and pushed him on to railings which were two stories above the ground,” Mrs Anderson continued.

“He was fearful that he would fall over the railings.

“He called out for his colleagues to help and at this point Allan was brought under control.”

Defence Ian Flynn said his client needed assistance from the community instead of punishment.

He said: “This was a first offence, but a high tariff one. His mother forgave him immediately and there were no injuries for anyone involved.

“He understands that alcohol and his problems do not mix.”

Sheriff Pino Di Emidio placed Allan on a 12-month community payback order.

He said: “I am satisfied that these offences are serious enough to warrant my imposition of this order and I will also instruct a progress review in six months to see how things are progressing.”
