Dad called police on son after he pulled a knife

A Dad was forced to phone the police after locking his drunk and shoeless son in the kitchen when he pulled a knife, a court has heard.

Rory Starkey had been told not to come back to the house in Kirriemuir’s Prosen Road after going out drinking, but the 18-year-old defied the advice and ended up threatening his dad and younger brother.

Appearing from custody at Forfar Sheriff Court on Tuesday, Starkey, of Glenmoy Terrace, Forfar, admitted behaving in a threatening manner at the address in Kirriemuir on July 19 and brandishing a knife, while subject to two bail orders.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said Starkey had moved from Kirriemuir to his own tenancy in Forfar shortly before the incident but had gone back there to visit.

He left the house to meet friends for a drink, and was told by his father not to return because he would not be able to stay.

“Around 11.45pm Mr Starkey became aware of a loud banging at the front door and was confronted by the accused, heavily under the influence and without any shoes on,” the fiscal said.

Starkey said an unknown male had stolen his shoes and he was going to “sort him out”.

The accused’s father then followed his son into the kitchen and saw him take a knife with a five inch blade out of a drawer.

“He pleaded with his son to return the knife to the drawer and the accused threw it down, but then picked it back up.

“The father became concerned about what his son’s actions would be and he left the kitchen and jammed the door shut,” added the fiscal.

The accused left the house by the back door and police were called. They traced Starkey a few minutes later in nearby Tannage Brae.

Defence solicitor Jennifer Strachan said the accused had consumed a considerable amount of alcohol.

“He was generally frustrated and does not have a great recollection of what occurred,” she added.

“He accepts he took a knife from the drawer, but does not accept that it would have gone any further than that.”

Starkey is currently on remand in connection with other matters at Inverness Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Pino Di Emidio told the accused: “You have a short record, but it is a record of considerable concern.”

He deferred sentence on Starkey until October 23 for social inquiry reports to be obtained.
