Harley-Davidson link is set in stone

A piece of Angus history is USA-bound to further cement the bond between the area and motorcycling’s most famous name.

This summer a projected crowd of a million bikers will gather in celebration of the Harley-Davidson legend at the world-famous Sturgis motorcycle rally.

The 75th anniversary event will see the opening of a new plaza celebrating the marque and it is set to feature a slate from the home of the Davidson family, whose mid-19th Century journey across the Atlantic would forge the foundations of the famous bike brand.

Angus enthusiasts led the restoration of the cottage at Netherton, near Brechin, and Maggie Sherrit of the Davidson Legacy said they were proud to share the latest link.

“The slate is now on its way from Aberdeen, Scotland, to Aberdeen, South Dakota,” said Maggie.

“When it arrives there, it’ll be picked up by Matt Olsen of 20th Century Racing and he’ll be transporting it, with a group of riders on vintage Harley-Davidson Panheads and Knuckleheads, the 300 miles to Sturgis.

“They will present it to the Mayor of Sturgis and it’ll end up at the rally point on the new Sturgis Harley-Davidson Plaza.

“The plaza is being officially opened on July 31 and it’s the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.”

Bearing the Harley-Davidson emblem, the gift bears the inscription: ‘Roofslate from the Scottish home of William C Davidson. Father of the founders, builder of The Shed, the first home of Harley-Davidson.’
