Police in Angus are urging householders to be on their guard against bogus callers after an 85-year-old man was targeted in the Arbroath area.

A man called at the elderly man’s address in Brechin Road at around 4.30pm on Monday and offered his services as a plumber.

He offered no identification but gained entry to the house. Once inside he asked the householder to run the taps. He left a short time later, stealing a two-figure sum of money.

The suspect is described as in his late twenties, about 6ft 2in, wearing a tammy hat and possibly a grey top and grey bottoms. He spoke with a local accent.

Police have also received other reports of men looking for work in the Brechin and Demondale road areas.

Officers ask all residents to be suspicious of anyone arriving unannounced at their door and to ensure doors are secure, even when at home, and use a door chain.

You should not let anyone in until you are certain of who they are or who they claim to represent by asking to see their identification.

Anyone who has information regarding this bogus caller is asked to call the police on 101.
