An Angus teenager has been sentenced to a period of detention following an assault on a fellow resident at a secure unit.
Connor McCall, 17, a resident of Rossie Secure Accommodation Services near Montrose, appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday, when he was sentenced to four months’ detention after admitting the charge.
The court heard how the complainant had suffered a broken and bleeding nose as a result of the assault, which took place on March 29 this year.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said: “At the time both the accused and the complainer were residents at Rossie and the witnesses were staff.
“At around 6.35pm the accused and witnesses were within the TV lounge watching a film when the accused got up and lunged at the complainer, punching him on the side of his face.
“The accused took hold of him and punched him on the head and face three times before being restrained.
“The incident was captured on CCTV and the complainer’s nose was broken as a result of being punched in the face.”
McCall’s solicitor Willie Rennie told the court his client was already subject to a three-year sentence imposed at Glasgow Sheriff Court and that his reports create “a great deal of concern”.
Mr Rennnie added: “There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of explanation for the offence and he doesn’t seek a community-based disposal.
“The report also says that he is unwilling to engage in making changes to his life. It seems the only way forward is to conclude matters by some form of custodial sentence.”
Sheriff Robert Vaughan said McCall’s reports made for “gloomy reading” before sentencing him to a four-month concurrent sentence.
