A 34-year-old Polish man has been arrested following a car crash that sparked a major river rescue.
The accident happened around 10.30pm on Saturday night when a black Hyundai left a private road near Dalbog Farm, by Edzell, and plunged 70ft down a gully.
The car, which was carrying three Polish forestry workers aged 34, 35 and 57, smashed into a tree and ended up on its side in a river.
Two of the men got out of the wreckage and raised the alarm. However, the older man was left trapped in the back of the car with a suspected broken neck.
Firefighters cut the man free and he was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee then transferred to the specialist spinal unit at Glasgow Southern General Hospital.
He remains there in a stable condition. It is understood the driver has now been released pending further police inquiries.
The forestry workers had only arrived in Angus on Saturday morning before starting a job for a Christmas tree firm.
Fraser Scott, station manager at Arbroath, said: “I would urge people to be aware of road conditions, especially on country roads, because that has played a factor in this accident.”
Mr Scott praised the emergency services for their efforts during the rescue operation, particularly their joined-up working in what were poor conditions on a rain-lashed dark night.
