Cat owner fears next victim of Coupar Angus speeders may be human

A mother who watched in horror as her cat was run over by a speeding driver in Coupar Angus has urged motorists to slow down before a human life is taken.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said she is terrified reckless drivers could kill her child and is even considering leaving the town.

She and her daughter could only watch helplessly last month as their cat was mown down in George Street by a male driving a dark blue Ford Mondeo at, she estimates, about 50mph.

She said, “There have been lots of near misses and if you speak to anyone in the town, they will say speeding is a problem and something needs to be done.

“It was 3.45pm when our cat was run over and the school had just come out and there were kids everywhere. We had stopped to stroke the cat and it got a fright and ran on to the road.

“It could have been so much worse because my eight-year-old was running into the road to save the cat it could have been her that was hit.

“The people drive in the town centre like nutters. They have no consideration for pedestrians at all and lorry drivers don’t look where they’re going either.

“Cars just ignore the pedestrian crossing outside the chemist shop. Some of them are people who live locally, especially youngsters. Nothing is ever done about it and it’s making me want to move.”

The woman said she wanted to remain anonymous because she does not want to be singled out but urged others to start a campaign for safety measures.

“The whole town would be behind a campaign because a lot of people have kids that go to Coupar Angus Primary and lots of people have lost an animal to the roads.

“There have been campaigns in Meigle and Burrelton but that was only after a schoolgirl was killed. Is it going to take something like that before we get something done here?”
