Two teenagers from Carnoustie who were in a horrific car crash in Angus remained in a critical condition in hospital last night.

Ross McDonald and Gregor Brand, both aged 17, were travelling in a Vauxhall Corsa which flipped on to its roof on the road between Easthaven and Westhaven just before 8pm on Wednesday.

Ross is a talented footballer who has represented Dundee United at under-15 and under-17 level, though was recently told by the club that his contract would not be extended.

Gregor is understood to have been the driver of the black Corsa.

A police spokesman said inquiries into the crash were continuing and that both teenagers remained in a “critical but stable” condition.

Police believe the Corsa may have been travelling with a blue Renault Clio prior to the collision.

The spokesman said: “Officers are inquiring into the circumstances leading up to the collision and are particularly keen to trace any witnesses who may have seen a black Vauxhall Corsa with white wheels and a blue Renault Clio in the Arbroath area between 6.30pm and 7.55pm on Wednesday.”

The location of the accident is immediately adjacent to the Aberdeen to Dundee railway line and police are also asking rail passengers or witnesses who saw the accident or the cars to get in touch by calling 101.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to free the two casualties from the car before they were treated by paramedics at the scene then rushed to Ninewells Hospital under police escort.
