GlaxoSmithKline’s local apprentice drive welcomed

The company is looking to fill its engineering vacancies by recruiting from the Montrose area.

Angus councillor Paul Valentine has welcomed news that the town’s biggest employer is looking to recruit local apprentices.

GlaxoSmithKline is looking for talent to apply for apprenticeship roles at its Montrose plant.

Last year the pharmaceutical firm employed two engineering and two life science apprentices.

This year it is looking for applications in the areas of engineering (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, design) and quality control, with the roles starting in July.

Mr Valentine said: “This is excellent news for Montrose.

“I’m delighted to see that young people are being given this opportunity, especially when most of the news we hear seems to be about job losses.”

The scheme is part of GSK’s early talent programme in the UK which at Montrose has trained more than 20 new recruits in the past five years.

Montrose site director Andy Ross said: “GSK provides one of the most comprehensive training programmes in the country providing world class training, access to qualifications and great career prospects to prospective trainees.”

Applicants for the apprenticeship programme require five Standard Grades actual or predicted including maths and English.

The closing date for applications is March 1.
