Angus firms urged to cash in on Commonwealth Games

The new Emirates Arena in the East End of Glasgow will be used during the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Angus businesses have been urged to cash-in on the Commonwealth Games.

Angus Commonwealth Games Steering Group chairwoman councillor Jeanette Gaul said local companies should register interest in supplying goods and services for the event.

With the shooting competitions to be held at Barry Buddon near Carnoustie, the county is expected to benefit from a significant windfall through boosted tourism.

Mrs Gaul said it was vital for companies are made aware of the opportunities created by the 2014 Glasgow games.

She said: “We’re immensely proud that Angus is going to be a games venue next summer, when the shooting competition at Barry Buddon will draw thousands of people into the area. We are working to ensure that visitors enjoy their visit and that we make the most of that opportunity for Angus.

“However, a vast array of business opportunities related to the games is available now, and we want to make sure that our local companies are aware of them and know how to register their interest.”

Games organisers are already working with dozens of national and multi-national companies, but there are many opportunities for Scottish business to get involved.

Businesses can register at the Glasgow Business Portal website where they can select the categories of goods and services appropriate to their offering.

They will receive automated email alerts on opportunities which match their preferences.

Local companies can also register with Public Contracts Scotland Quick Quote system to be considered for all low-value contracts not advertised publicly through a formal tender.

Angus Council’s business advice team is offering information and support to any local company interested in finding out more about current tenders and low-value contracts available.
