A post office has warned it may close if a nearby shop is granted permission to sell alcohol.
Party Discount yesterday took a step closer to gaining full permission to sell alcohol from its premises on Lochee High Street.
Members of the city’s licensing board granted a provisional licence despite objection from Scott Campbell, of the nearby Spar and post office.
In a letter to the committee, Mr Campbell made it clear his trade had suffered as a result of other shops selling alcohol in the area.
He added that if the latest application went through, three retailers would be permitted to sell alcohol within a 50-yard stretch of the street.
“I have spent in excess of £200k to set up the Spar and post office to the benefit of the residents of, and visitors to, Lochee,” he wrote.
“I have been running the post office and Spar for less than two years.
“I lost £85,000 in my first years of trading.
“The post office itself has run at a loss of approximately £1000 per month since it opened, which has meant that effectively I have been providing this facility to the good people of Lochee as a public service.”
He continued, “Bringing in another operator will reduce my sales further and may well be the difference between being able to keep my business running or having to close.
“In my view, the loss of the Spar and post office in Lochee will undermine much of the good that has been done by the council.”
