Changing technology market spells end for Dundee firm Computa Services & Consultants

A Dundee computer systems firm has been placed into liquidation with the loss of six jobs.

Computa Services & Consultants Ltd was established in the early 1980s and its package of bespoke computer systems was initially well received and clients included, Dingbro, Kolfor Plant and NCR.

The firm grew significantly, and at its height there were more than 20 employees operating out of its base on Broughty Ferry Road.

However, the rise of personal computers through the 1990s and the increasing flexibility of low-cost operating systems meant the company had to change tack from its original role.

It branched into development work and eventually focused on IT solutions, but it had been loss-making for several years before the decision to cease trading was taken last week.

Liquidator Iain Mitchell of Henderson Loggie in Dundee said the once pioneering firm had essentially been overtaken by advances in technology.

He said: ”The company was founded in 1983 and was successful initially and it had sales over all of the UK and Ireland.

”The information we have is that the business began to change in the mid-1990s when PCs with similar services became available. After that, fewer customers were willing to invest in bespoke computer software.

”In the late 80s and 90s the company would have employed about 20 staff, but at the time of the liquidation there was a total of six employees five staff and one director.

”Unfortunately the company had been making losses over the last few years.”
