National Express Dundee investigating serious fire on Fintry bus

A plume of black smoke could be seen hanging over Fintry on Wednesday afternoon as a bus burst into flames.

The single-decker number 32 service was heading along Fintry Road when the drama unfolded.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and donned breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze, which took hold in the rear of the vehicle.

Eyewitness Ian Foulis (39) said: ”I was walking past it and there was stuff coming out the back. I think it must have been diesel and it just went ‘boom!’ right up.”

A spokeswoman for Tayside Fire and Rescue confirmed they were called to the scene just before 1pm.

Watch manager Grant Foreman said crews could see the smoke from as far away as the Kingsway.

National Express Dundee managing director Phil Smith confirmed there will be an investigation.

”It is a very serious incident and something we will take a very close look at because it’s a very unusual thing to happen,” he said.

”Until we recover the vehicle and dissect the mechanics we can’t really say anything else. I believe there was one passenger on board but neither he nor the driver were injured.”
