Kirkton residents up in arms about ‘street racers’

Residents in the Kirkton area of Dundee are up in arms over problems with “street racers”.

People living in Helmsdale Avenue said they fear for their safety as drivers of motorbikes, mopeds and cars use the street as a drag strip.

Police said they are aware of the situation and are investigating a number of complaints.

One concerned tenant said: “It’s a serious accident waiting to happen. I once saw two cars racing each other. One was trying to overtake the other it was totally crazy.”

Locals said an incident earlier this year in which a child was hurt was just one of a number of episodes and near misses to have taken place in the street.

Councillor John Alexander said: “Many residents on Helmsdale Avenue are concerned at not only the speed at which some drivers travel along the street but the manner of the driving.

“I am aware of a few near misses in the last year, as well as a couple of accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians, which is clearly of great concern. The discussions regarding Helmsdale are ongoing and I’d like to reassure residents the issue is being monitored.”

A police spokeswoman said: “The Kirkton area is a priority for Police Scotland in Dundee. We have received several complaints of anti-social behaviour, which are currently being investigated, in particular involving mini and midi motorcycles and motorised scooters.

“People involved in this behaviour are putting themselves and other pedestrians and road users in danger. We will continue to deploy extra patrols in the area and work closely with local schools, Dundee City Council housing and education departments, community groups and local councillors to tackle the issue.

“However, we need the community’s help and would encourage anyone being affected by this type of anti-social behaviour to report it to police on 101 or, anonymously, through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
