Construction firm to build nursery and primary at Baldragon site

The nursey and primary school will be built on the existing Baldragon Academy site.
The nursey and primary school will be built on the existing Baldragon Academy site.

The company that has built many of Dundee’s newest schools is to get the contract for another two on the city’s northern fringe.

If councillors give the go-ahead next week, Robertson Construction will be responsible for building replacements for Sidlaw View Primary and Jessie Porter Nursery in Strathmartine.

It has already been chosen to build the new Baldragon Academy and all three schools will share a site, making it the first three-tier community campus in the city.

City development convener Will Dawson said: “The new schools are being built on adjacent plots in the existing Baldragon Academy grounds and Robertson has a track record of creating local employment opportunities and using sub-contractors based in the city.

“It would also be sensible and practical if both the nursery/primary and secondary school buildings were constructed over similar timescales using the same contractor.”

Education convener Stewart Hunter said: “The new secondary school will provide 1,100 places and throughout its construction the existing school will remain operational.

“Therefore, it is important that we get the procurement part of the contract right so that we can have a seamless transition.”

In a report to the city development committee, officers say that having one company build the whole campus will lessen the impact on neighbours and ensure economies of scale in procurement.
