Police swoop on Dundee bars in unlicensed doormen crackdown

Police were joined by officers from the Security Industry Authority in the operation to check for valid licences.
Police were joined by officers from the Security Industry Authority in the operation to check for valid licences.

Police and security industry officers swooped on pubs and clubs in Dundee city centre last weekend looking for unlicensed door supervisors.

Acting on “intelligence,” officers from the Security Industry Authority (SIA), working in conjunction with Police Scotland, questioned almost 50 doormen as part of a special joint operation.

Operation Orchid saw police and London-based SIA officers swoop on 16 pubs and nightclubs, interviewing 46 door supervisors during the visit.

All 46 people checked were found to be in possession of valid licences.

However, the officer leading the investigation, Sharon Roberts, said one person was being investigated on suspected breaches of licence conditions and of supplying false statements to the authority.

Ms Roberts said: “We visited several premises and all the people we spoke to had valid licences. However, we have been made aware that some of the information that has been given to us may be false.

“We are an intelligence-led organisation and we were working in partnership with Police Scotland.”

She added: “The checks undertaken on Saturday form part of wider activity that the SIA is undertaking in the area to ensure that both individuals and the businesses supplying them are operating lawfully.

“Whilst it is positive to see all those checked held valid licences, it is important that those working in the industry are aware of all their legal responsibilities and the potential offences that can be committed.

“The SIA has a very productive partnership with Police Scotland, we share common aims and will continue to work together … to ensure public safety and to deal robustly with all PSIA offences.”

Chief Inspector Shaun McKillop, head of policing in Dundee city centre, said: “Working in partnership with the SIA, officers in Dundee are taking a proactive approach in tackling and addressing issues involving unlicensed door supervisors.

“Ensuring that door supervisors are properly trained and managed goes a long way towards reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour and keeping those who enjoy socialising in licensed premises at night safe.”
