Motorists in Dundee will face weeks of misery as East Dock Street is torn up to enable improvements to be made to the gas network.
A contraflow system will be in place in the eastbound lanes between Peep O’Day Lane and Market Street from Monday July 20, with significant delays expected for six weeks.
Residents and commuters alike will be hoping there is no repeat of the mayhem that gripped the city in 2010 as 10 weeks of resurfacing works took place on East Dock Street.
The ensuing gridlock spread out on to roads throughout the city centre and delay after delay tested the patience of the public.
Even if the latest works progress as planned, there is likely to be significant disruption on the route one of the main thoroughfares through Dundee with other roadworks already in place nearby.
A major part of the city centre is currently affected as the waterfront development takes shape.
Gas distribution network company SGN said the East Dock Street works would operate “seven days a week, 7am to 7pm”.
“We’re aware that this is a traffic-sensitive area of Dundee and would like to assure everyone that we will do everything we can to minimise disruption and complete our work as quickly as possible,” SGN team manager Peter Barclay said.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience our work causes and would like to thank road users in advance for their patience.”
He added: “The existing gas network needs to be reinforced within the Port of Dundee area to provide more capacity to meet the demand for gas now and in the future.
“As part of our planning process we have met with Dundee City Council and will continue to work with the local authority and the community throughout the course of our work.”
Drivers are likely to face delays and it’s recommended that anyone travelling through the area allow extra time for their journey.
SGN said pedestrian access to East Dock Street would be maintained at all times, while businesses in the area will remain open as usual.
