Village spat puts a spanner in the works for youths’ park project

Work on a £55,000 play park upgrade led by youngsters has been halted amid a spat dividing a Fife community.

Children and young people in Blairhall have spent five years raising funds to improve the village recreation ground.

However, residents in South Avenue complained about the installation of equipment, including a flying fox and parkour apparatus, right behind their homes.

Two petitions have been started, one by those who want the apparatus shifted to another part of the park and a second by people angry that the work has stopped.

The row has prompted an angry exchange of words on the Blairhall Gala Facebook page.

Speaking for householders who want the equipment shifted, Billy Moffat said, “We aren’t against this, it is just where it is sited. We don’t want it stopped altogether as the kids raised a lot of money.

“But it should go up the top where there are other bits and pieces to play on.

“A lot of elderly people live in South Avenue and this is right behind their fences and bedroom windows.”

Local councillor Bobby Clelland has called a site meeting on Monday for councillors and council officers.

He said: “Hopefully we can find a way to go ahead.

“It would be sad to lose this after the hard work and fund raising the kids have done.

“Two sites were identified but the other one further up has no street lights and there have been issues with underage drinking there.

“This site was thought of as the best for the safety of the kids. It is nearer houses, parents can see their children and there are lights at the path.”
