A construction worker has sustained “serious” injuries in an accident with a lorry in Dundee.

The 54-year-old a worker from Robertson Construction, who are building the new Harris Academy was involved in a collision with a lorry on the city’s Perth Road, close to the construction site entrance at around 10.50am.

The road was closed for around five hours and the Scottish Ambulance service provided medical attention at the scene.

Pedestrians and traffic were directed away and diversions were put in place before the road reopened before 4pm.

Kevin Dickson, managing director for Robertson Tayside, said: “We are currently investigating an incident that occurred outside our site at Harris Academy, Dundee, where a member of our site team has been injured.

“We are working with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the incident and senior management are on site.

“The individual involved has been transferred to hospital. Until the extent of his injuries are known it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.

“We are providing full support to the individual, his family and colleagues.”

A member of staff on the construction site said: “News of the accident did filter down to the site but we had no idea that it was a serious incident. At first we just thought it was an accident on the site itself.

“It’s only now that we are coming out for lunch and seeing the lorry there on the road that we are realising how serious it must be.

“Given that the road has been closed off too we just hope that the guy’s all right.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “A 54-year-old man suffered serious injuries.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have information that could assist officers with their enquiries is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
