Accountant and golfer Ronald W Gibson dies aged 84

Mr Gibson.
Mr Gibson.

Prominent Dundee accountant and golfing figure Ronald W Gibson has died at the age of 84.

He was senior partner in KPMG in the city, having begun his career with Moody, Stuart & Robertson and later moving to Thomson McLintock.

Golf was a major part of his life and he was captain of Panmure Barry and a member of the Royal & Ancient in St Andrews, serving on its finance committee.

Mr Gibson was born in Dundee and educated at Downfield Primary and Morgan Academy before joining Moodie, Stuart & Robertson.

He excelled with the former and was awarded the Albert J Watson Prize in 1949 for his performance as a student in the final exams of the Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

He moved to Thomson McLintock and concluded his career in 1990 with KPMG before the company’s business in Dundee was taken over by Henderson Loggie.

His work covered many aspects of accountancy and he devoted his expertise to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, setting exams for accountancy students.

Golf was a passion and he was a member at Downfield before joining Panmure Barry in 1956. He was appointed captain in 1980.

Mr Gibson and wife Eleanor lived in Broughty Ferry, and he is also survived by two daughters and three grandchildren.

His thanksgiving service will be at St Luke’s and Queen Street Church, of which he was a member for over 50 years, on Friday.
