Police opposing Fat Sams nightclub’s bid for 4.30am licence

Tayside Police is opposing a plan for Dundee’s Fat Sams nightclub to extend its opening hours until 4.30am.
The application would see the South Ward Road venue open late on a Wednesday and from Friday to Sunday.
However, police said any change to operating hours at “high-risk times” could increase city centre crime.
In a letter to the council’s licensing board, the force said: “When considering high-risk times, crime levels and incidents display an upward trend from 11pm to 3.59am, generally peaking between midnight and 2.59am.
“It is no coincidence that these hours correspond with pubs and nightclubs’ closing times.
“Any change in opening hour of any major establishment within the city is likely to impact on these high-risk times.”
It is understood the nightclub has been affected by pubs in the surrounding area being granted permission to stay open as late as itself and that the extra two hours would help the venue.
