An out-of-control Alsatian has ferociously attacked other dogs in the Monifieth and Broughty Ferry areas, according to worried owners.
It sank its teeth into a poodle and springer spaniel cross-breed in unprovoked attacks at the beach path, drawing blood from painful bite wounds.
The Alsatian’s owner has been condemned by a local expert, who accused them of irresponsibility for not keeping the dog under control when they knew it was attacking others.
Sue Campbell’s miniature poodle Ellie suffered puncture wounds when the Alsatian pounced on the morning of March 11.
“It bit her hard on her rear leg,” she said. “The owner saw this and called off his dog and then darted towards the beach out of sight. Ellie had two large puncture wounds.”
Sue’s partner, who was with Ellie, shouted at the Alsatian’s owner but was ignored.
“To think another dog owner could watch this happen and not even come over to see if she was OK or even talk to the dog’s owner totally bewilders me,” she added.
Ellie was taken to the nearby vets where Sue learned another dog had just been taken in for treatment after it had also been attacked.
Steve Comerford was with his cross-breed Murphy on the path on the morning of February 23 when the Alsatian launched an assault.
“I was cycling my bike with my dog running alongside when I passed this guy and his dog coming in the opposite direction,” he said. “About 30 seconds later I heard the guy shouting.
“I looked back and saw the dog tearing along the cycle path away from its owner. I got off my bike and put it in the way but it ignored me and went straight for Murphy and started attacking him.
“I ran across and booted this dog. Murphy got away but it ran after him again and got a hold of him. I had to grab the dog by the neck and ripped it off Murphy and it went still.”
Mr Comerford said the dog’s owner tried to offer him his phone number but he was too busy to accept. Murphy limped home where Steve noticed blood on his leg.
A spokeswoman for Angus Council said: “We have received one complaint recently where a member of the public reported an attack on their dog on Monifieth beach. We are investigating this complaint and would be glad to hear from any members of the public who have had their dogs attacked, or have witnessed such attacks.
“Please contact our dog warden service on 08452 777 778, or contact Tayside Police with information.”
Pam Duncan, president of the Dundee Alsatian and Training Club, said: “We promote responsible dog ownership and this isn’t happening if the owner of this Alsatian knows his dog is attacking other dogs and isn’t keeping it under control. “We run obedience classes and would be able to help this owner of he gets in touch.”
Tayside Police said they will be speaking with Mr Comerford to find out more about the attack.
