Members of the Tay Rail Bridge Disaster Memorial Trust have been granted permission to build a permanent landmark near the rail bridge in Wormit.
It comes after years of campaigning by the group, which wants to construct memorials on the Fife and Dundee sides of the bridge to commemorate the disaster which claimed 59 lives in December 1879.
It is understood a small plot of land on Dundee’s Riverside has been allocated for the construction of a tribute, with a similar site secured in Fife being welcomed by trust member Ian Nimmo White.
Hopeful a memorial could be built within the next year, he said: “We’ve got a site at Wormit Bay and we’re meeting with planning officials next week.
“We’re quite good at building memorials to recent tragedies but not older ones. We’re not there yet but the end of our campaign is in sight.”
