Sunday far from a day of rest for Broughty Ferry lifeboat crew

Strong tides off Broughty Ferry contributed to a busy Sunday for the local lifeboat crew.

The inshore lifeboat was first called into action just after 5pm when the coastguard requested assistance for a jet skier who was in trouble after running out of fuel.

Coxswain Murray Brown and volunteer crew members Donald Rentoul and Euan Maze towed the jet ski, complete with rider, safely back to Broughty Ferry harbour.

The team were still refuelling the boat when a member of the public ran in to warn them that another craft was heading straight for the lifeboat station.

The boat had come off its mooring at the Royal Tay Yacht Club and was only 20 yards from the lifeboat shed.

The inshore lifeboat was launched again and the same crew attached a tow and took the boat back to a different mooring at the yacht club.

The call-outs rounded off a busy day for the station, which had earlier sent the all-weather lifeboat and six crew members to the gala day at St Andrews.

Donald Rentoul said: “Taking the boat to St Andrews was a great opportunity to be able to show members of the local community the work that we do.

“It allowed us to show our appreciation for the donations they give and the fundraising people do. When we got back we put our skills into action and did what we are there to do.”

The jet skier was towed to land at around 6pm.
