A man has died in a fire in a tenement flat in Dundee in the early hours of this morning.
The 41-year-old was carried by firefighters from the blaze in a top-floor flat of the four-storey building at 256 Hilltown.
He suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation in the inferno and was taken to waiting ambulance personnel in the street who tried to save him.
Their efforts were in vain, however, and the man was declared dead at the scene.
The alarm was raised about 12.30am and six units of Tayside Fire and Rescue were despatched to the burning building.
The outbreak in the property was burning fiercely and crews from four water tenders trained their jets on the flames.
They raised an aerial platform to get closer to the source of the fire while colleagues with breathing apparatus entered the building to tackle the outbreak from inside.
Firefighters found the severely injured man inside a flat in one of the upper floors, and their priority was to get him to medical help outside.
A spokesman for Tayside Police confirmed the man’s death and said there would be a joint investigation with Tayside Fire and Rescue into the cause of the tragic blaze.
