Applicant says 18-flat plan would improve site of Broughty Ferry lock-up garages

Lock-up garages in Broughty Ferry could be replaced with 18 flats, if a planning application succeeds.

The architects acting for applicant Ferrier Holdings have argued that the site, opposite the Mackinnon Centre, is in ”desperate need of redevelopment” as it has become a focus for vandalism in recent years.

The Voigt Partnership told Dundee City Council: ”Currently the majority of the garages are used for general storage purposes and not vehicle storage, and many are vacant.

”Attempts to lease these garages has resulted in an extremely poor response, believed to be because of vandalism and the run-down nature of the lock-ups themselves and the site generally.

”The site itself is not pleasant and many of the local children have been told by parents not to walk through there after dark.”

The architects said houses had initially been considered for the redevelopment, but it was felt that a terrace of three-storey flats would be more appropriate and make more efficient use of the land. Each flat would have two bedrooms.

The plans also include the creation of a new road running along the southern edge of the flats, with traffic calming measures to encourage speeds of 20mph or less.
