First Minister Alex Salmond is to visit Leuchars to speak to worried people in the community as the fight continues to protect the local RAF base.

Mr Salmond who has already travelled to Lossiemouth, where locals are waging a similar campaign has accepted an invitation to attend a meeting in the Fife village on February 11.

He will answer questions in Henderson Hall and people from across north-east Fife have been urged by Leuchars Community Council chairwoman Carroll Finnie to attend and show support for the threatened base.

Mrs Finnie said, “When I attended the Scottish Parliament last week with Fife councillors, MSPs and other people I spoke to Mr Salmond about what we thought would happen if Leuchars closed.

“I invited him to come and talk to residents of Leuchars and the surrounding area. I was really pleased that he agreed without hesitation.”

Mrs Finnie said it was vital that people from across the area championed the cause of the station before the Ministry of Defence decides which base to close, and stressed that Leuchars was a small village compared with Lossiemouth and should not be left to fight alone.

She said, “This concerns people in a wide area of Fife. We need to get the message out to people that it’s not just Leuchars that would be affected.

“Shops would close, transport would suffer, all different kinds of things would be hit this matters to everyone. We have to do everything we can to keep RAF Leuchars open.”

The session with Mr Salmond will start at 3.30pm.To show your support for RAF Leuchars, leave a comment below or click here.
