High praise for Kirkcaldy Foodbank

The Kirkcaldy Foodbank was launched three weeks ago.

Kirkcaldy High School pupils are rallying behind the call to support the newly opened Kirkcaldy Foodbank.

After attending the foodbank’s official launch three weeks ago, pupils and staff have spread the word through assemblies and social media, highlighting a desperate need in the community.

The school has since been overwhelmed with the amount of food and toiletries which have been donated. Fourth year enterprise students led the initiative and arranged for donations to be collected from classes throughout the school.

To boost the campaign further, a fundraising soup kitchen was organised, with staff and pupils giving a donation to the foodbank in exchange for some wholesome homemade soup and bread.

The event, which was held on Thursday, was also attended by John Cullen and Lynn Jenks from Kirkcaldy Foodbank.

Guests said they were both moved and entertained by a short play called The Christmas Miracle, which was written and performed by first year pupils Jamie-Lee Gordon, Kirsty Graham, Claire Redford and Mollie Turner.

Rector Derek Allan said: “The whole initiative represents what it means to live well together, with compassion and generosity of spirit being core human values worth promoting.”

He thanked the school’s head of business and enterprise Yvonne Nelson and librarian Eileen Montador for their support.

Mr Allan also thanked sixth year pupil Ryan Don for building a sleigh, adding that many other pupils and staff had also helped, far too many to mention.

“This kind of school effort is not possible without the help and support of the wider community and we have to extend particular thanks to Kettle Produce who ensured that the school had all the fresh vegetables necessary to make a fair few varied pots of soup.”

The school hopes that pupils, parents and staff will continue to donate to the foodbank, which was launched on December 2, in the new year.

Foodbank volunteers collect, store and sort donations in Dysart Kirk, then distribute through partner agencies.

There are collection points at all the major supermarkets in Kirkcaldy. The foodbank accepts non-perishable goods such as tinned and dried food, as well as essential items including nappies.

Donations are also accepted at the kirk on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to noon and on Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.
