Central Fife running dry after fine summer

Central Fife is running out of water.

Households have been warned that supplies at reservoirs are running low following the long, dry summer.

Scottish Water is having to pump water from other sources after revealing the Lomond Hills reservoirs, which serve Glenrothes and the surrounding areas, are struggling to cope with demand.

The company has urged residents to conserve supplies by turning off taps while brushing teeth, using buckets and sponges instead of hoses to wash cars and boiling only necessary amounts of water for hot drinks.

The four local sources Holl, Drumian, Harperleas and Ballo are considerably lower than normal for this time of year, after sustained periods of warm weather in recent months.

Despite some rainfall, water supplies are struggling to recover, prompting operators to issue advice to people about water usage.

John Rae, water operations general manager with the company, said: “Our reservoirs in the Lomond Hills currently have lower than normal water levels.

“There has, of course, been some rainfall in recent weeks but that has to be seen in the context of following a very dry summer.

“In the short term, we are able to move water through pipes from other supply sources and backup sources to boost our network in the parts of Fife served by the Lomond Hills.”

Ballo reservoir, the largest of the Lomond Hill reservoirs, is a fraction of its normal size.

Although maintenance is planned at the site later in the year, the low level over the summer meant the local fishery had to close to anglers.
