‘It will take away the community identity’ Glenrothes parents present petition to save closure-threatened school

A group of residents from the Tanshall area of Glenrothes handed over a petition to Fife Council leader Alex Rowley, objecting to the proposed closure of Tanshall Primary.

The petition, signed by 631 residents, was handed over to Mr Rowley outside a windswept Fife House in Glenrothes ahead of the council’s executive committee.

The voluntary group Community Help @ Tanshall Ch@t is based at the primary School. The group aims to work together to bring the community together.

The aims of Ch@t are to help create a clean, safe and healthy environment for all Tanshall residents.

Group spokesman Euan Howells, 32, said the group held an emergency meeting in Glenrothes last Friday after learning of the school closure proposals in last Wednesday’s Courier.

The father of two, whose children Shannon, 11, and Hannah, 6, are in P6 and P2 at Tanshall, said the council had to realise that school closures were about people, not just politics.

Mr Howells said: “All schools are the hub of any community and, not only this will disrupt all the children involved, it will take away the community identity we as a constituted group are trying so hard to build up.

“Community Help @ Tanshall recently received a rather large grant from Fife Health and Wellbeing Alliance and feel disheartened at this news of possible closures.”
