Two Cupar women have been taken to Ninewells Hospital in a serious condition after being involved in a horrific road crash, while an elderly Dairsie man overturned his car in a separate accident.

The incident involving the women took place on Monday on the A91 Cupar to Dairsie road near the Todhall Farm junction a stretch of road that has seen a number of serious accidents, including a fatality in 2005 when a 20-year-old man from St Andrews died.

Fife Constabulary said three vehicles a Ford Transit, Toyota Celica and a Ford Escort collided on the road at around 10.40am, resulting in the driver and passenger in one of the cars becoming trapped by twisted metal.

The fire and rescue service sent crews from Cupar, St Andrews and Newburgh to the scene and used specialist hydraulic cutting equipment to free the casualties.

An air ambulance arrived at around 11.15am and later flew the badly injured driver to Ninewells where she had a “minor” operation on Monday night.

The woman, who has not yet been named, was described as being in a “stable but critical” condition by police.

It is understood that the woman driver was travelling in her car with her two daughters.

The rear seat woman passenger was also taken to hospital with serious injuries along with the third woman, who is understood to be in a stable condition.Lucky escapeThe road the main route between St Andrews and Cupar was closed for several hours from the Kemback junction to the eastern outskirts of Cupar, leading motorists to find alternative routes.

Tailbacks stretched all the way through Cupar town centre for most of the day until the road eventually reopened shortly before 5pm.

Inspector Brenda Sinclair, deputy head of road policing, gave further details on the condition of the two women.

She said, “They are both receiving treatment at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where their current condition is reported as ‘serious’.

“Accident investigators are gathering evidence at the scene to determine the exact circumstances of this incident.”

She added, “I would appeal to any person who may have witnessed the accident to call us on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Meanwhile, an elderly Dairsie man had a lucky escape when the blue Mazda he was driving overturned in Dura Den on the Kemback to Pitscottie road at the same time emergency services were clearing the scene near Cupar, around a mile away.

Police say the man, who has not been named, clipped a parked car causing his vehicle to flip into the air and land on its roof.

Two fire appliances attended, as well as the emergency tender unit from the A91 crash site.

Crews freed the man from the vehicle and he was taken to Ninewells for a check-up, but escaped serious injury.
