A world-famous St Andrews hotel has been playing host to some of Europe’s best known footballers.
Stars from Tottenham Hotspur checked in at the Old Course on Wednesday evening after choosing to spend the night in Fife ahead of this evening’s clash with Hearts at Tynecastle in Edinburgh.
The London side whose players include Rafael Van der Vaart, Peter Crouch and England forward Jermain Defoe plumped for the relaxing resort as they prepare for tonight’s “Battle of Britain” Europa League qualifier.
News of the team’s arrival sparked speculation in and around St Andrews although The Courier can confirm rumours the squad flew into RAF Leuchars are wide of the mark.
It is understood Spurs had originally planned to spend the night in Edinburgh. However, with accommodation at a premium due to the Edinburgh festival, officials decided to spend the night 50 miles north in Fife instead.
As his team coach neared St Andrews, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said he was “really looking forward” to his brief stay in Fife.
The keen golfer added that he hoped to return with his clubs in the near future.
“I had a weekend at Gleneagles in the summer, which was fantastic,” he said. “Hopefully I will be able to come back to St Andrews with the clubs some time soon.”
It is thought the team may spend some time today enjoying a sight-seeing trip in St Andrews and it is understood officials at St Andrews University offered to make their playing fields available should the squad choose to train in Fife prior to heading for Tynecastle.
Tonight’s match kicks off at 7.45pm, with the return leg being held in London next Thursday.
