A website inviting ideas for a winning Dundee bid for UK City of Culture 2017 has attracted visitors from almost 100 countries.
The We Dundee site has also drawn visits from nearly 1,000 cities keen to see what events Dundee could host if it wins the cultural crown in November.
More than 25,000 people have visited the site, which is run by Dundee arts and design group Fleet Collective, since its launch in March.
Its first phase asking people to support Dundee’s bid drew 2,455 backers, while its second phase, inviting ideas, attracted 917 submissions.
Fleet Collective director Lyall Bruce said: “We had six visits from Algeria and someone from South Korea visited us, which was quite nice.
“Kazakhstan and Afghanistan also gave us visits, which we didn’t expect.
“Most of Europe was covered, although no-one visited us from Portugal, which is disappointing.”
Almost 10% of referrals to We Dundee came from The Courier’s website.
Lyall said: “That equated to 1,400 visits from The Courier, so that was really good compared to some of the other media.”
It is hoped that as many of the ideas as possible submitted before September 10 will be included in Dundee’s completed bid.
Lyall said: “There are still submissions coming but at the moment they are not getting passed on to the bid writing team as the cut-off has already happened.
“We’ll still find use for them though, maybe on Facebook, and if we win the City Of Culture we can still work things into the programme as it develops.”
The most-visited ideas on the site include an old tenement flat, a 1960s housing scheme house and other typical Dundee properties furnished and decorated as they were in the period they were built and preserved as a record of social history and open to the public.
Another popular submission reads: “Frankenstein reimagined for the modern age. Mary Shelley was inspired by Dundee and the latest scientific marvels of her day.”
A third submission said: “I’d like to see an ‘independent quarter’ in the city centre more investment in independent shops so Dundee can have more variety in book, clothes, music shops etc.
“I’d also like to see more investment in the live music and arts scene so it can continue to flourish.”
The City of Culture bidding team is putting together a proposed programme of events ahead of the final bid deadline on September 30.
Dundee is up against Leicester, Hull and Swansea Bay for the title. An eight-person Dundee delegation will visit current UK City of Culture Derry/Londonderry in November to put across the final case, with the winner expected to be announced within days of the presentations.
