A selection of work by one of Dundee’s most celebrated artists goes to auction this week.

Five pieces by James McIntosh Patrick are expected to make thousands of pounds when they go under the gavel on Thursday at BL Fenton & Sons on Victoria Road.

They include watercolours depicting countryside scenes at Kettins Burn, near Coupar Angus, and a woodland path at Dron, south of Perth.

There are also signed prints and a small oil painting of the coastline at Balmerino in Fife.

McIntosh Patrick is known for his finely detailed paintings that often depict the Angus landscape and Dundee.

With such strong local links, the auction house is confident the works will attract a number of willing buyers.

Auctioneer Steven Fenton says: “It’s hard to say how much they will make, but I would think it would be well into four figures each.”

The paintings and prints are being put up for sale by an unnamed local estate.

In the last five years the auction house has only come across around 10 original pieces by the artist, making the sale of his work relatively rare.

In July 2010, a McIntosh Patrick oil painting of Auchterhouse Farm sold for £8,100 at an auction in Perth (link).

The artist was born in Dundee in 1907 and died in 1998.
