Man v Bike for CHAS charity challenge

A group of pub pals are to hold a Top Gear-style challenge which will see runners pitched against cyclists in a bid to be the fastest from Dunkeld to Pitlochry.

More than half the 15-strong group will take a route on foot, while the remaining seven will pedal a longer route to their final destination.

The group hope the challenge on May 31 will raise thousands of pounds for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

Running team captain Fraser Maxwell said the idea for the man v bike challenge came about during a pub discussion.

He said: “We all go for a Friday pint. Half of us cycle and the other had started running, and there was a bit of banter that the runners could beat the cyclists in a race, so we decided to race from Dunkeld to Pitlochry.

“It’s quite an original fundraising idea. This year it’s just for us but we want to make it an annual event and next year anyone can enter.

“Hopefully it will become bigger and bigger and raise a lot of money. We are doing it for CHAS and we’ve already raised £1,000 but we want to raise as much as possible.”

He added that the winning team would be decided on the average time of all its members.

He said: “It will be really close competition. There’s all levels of ability across the group. The cyclists are going a different route they are going off-road but both groups finish in the same area.

“The runners are going 14 miles along the cycle track on the road and the cyclists are going 21 miles via Loch Ordie and Loch Oisnneach. We are out training three times a week, so it’s got pretty competitive.”

Local businesses have also got behind the challenge, with Pitlochry-based bike shop Escape Route servicing all the cycles free and the town’s Old Mill, which is the finishing point, putting on food and drinks.

Donations can be made to the fund by texting FMAX99 then the amount to 70070.
