Dundee doctor Peter Grant

Dundee doctor Peter Grant

Former Dundee doctor Peter Grant has died, aged 84.

Dr Grant, who treated thousands of patients from the 1960s onwards, died peacefully at his home in Newport.

Born in 1926, he was educated at Morgan Academy and graduated in medicine from St Andrews University in 1949.

Throughout his early years he was a distinguished athlete, having held local records in sprinting, as well as playing rugby for both his university and RAF air training corps teams.

Dr Grant began work at his Arbroath Road practice in the early 1960s, stayed there for 25 years.

He moved to another practice, this time in Albert Street, where he would become familiar to another generation of Dundonians before his retirement in 1993.

Outside of work Dr Grant was a keen golfer, playing at Panmure, and was an elder at Park Church for 20 years.

His son Richard said, “He devoted most of his life to his patients and there will be a lot of people in Dundee who will remember him as a traditional family GP.

“He was never off sick once in his career and in his early years he was always on call.”

He added, “We will miss him greatly.”

Dr Grant is survived by his daughter Sandra, a GP in Aberdeen, Richard, an electrical engineer in Glasgow, and six grandchildren.

His funeral will take place at Dundee Crematorium at 2.45pm on Thursday, to which all family and friends are invited.
