VIDEO: Perth tennis club hopes to boost members by making a racket

It’s a game more known for grunting and yelling.

But members of Perth tennis club have been making better use of their vocal chords with a song.

It’s hoped the tune, which has been posted on video sharing website Youtube, will encourage more people to take up the sport in the Fair City.

Sung by members of the club to the tune of Manfred Mann’s hit Do-Wah-Diddy, the song was the brainchild of members Irene Rixson and Judy Watt.

“It just struck us as a really novel way to make people aware of our club,” said Irene.

“We want to raise our club’s profile, encourage more people to join in the fun we have here and get the whole of Perth humming along.”

Conceived and written over a couple of sessions at the kitchen table, the catchy tune was reimagined as Serve, Lob, Rally, Volley.

Lines include: “Before we knew it we were warming up our game, singing serve, lob, rally, volley, Perth Tennis Club”, as well as “And we’re back training and improving our play, singing serve, lob, rally, volley, Perth Tennis Club.”

Irene added: “Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The oldies in particular loved it as they remembered the original song.

“We were all on such a high after singing our hearts out and from seeing how the recording and production of a song is done.”

The song was recorded at Kilgraston School in Bridge of Earn last month, with the guidance of Director of Music, Andrew McGarva.

He said “The school and I were delighted to lend a hand to this project.

“Kilgraston has a smart new recording studio so the technical side was pretty straightforward, it was the enthusiasm of the members that really made it rock.”

Founded in 1881, Perth Tennis Club is the oldest lawn tennis club in Scotland. Players of all ages and ability are encouraged to participate and from next month the club is to start offering a monthly membership package.

The club will also run Junior Summer Tennis Camps from June 30 to July 25.

Full details are on the club’s website and Facebook pages.
