Firefighter hails ‘life-saving’ smoke alarm after Perth house blaze

A smoke alarm recently fitted in a Perth house played a vital role in saving the occupier’s life, according to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
The service received two 999 calls to attend at a fire on Woodside Crescent shortly after 5am on Saturday.
One of the calls was from the female occupier who was asleep in a first-floor bedroom when she was woken by the smoke alarm, fitted by firefighters as part of a home fire safety visit.
Control staff advised her to leave the property immediately and firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The crews were faced with a well-developed fire in the ground-floor kitchen of the semi-detached house. There are no suspicious circumstances and the fire started in a tumble dryer that was not in use at the time.
Group manager Rab Middlemiss, who attended the fire, said: “This incident highlights the value of having working and fully-tested smoke alarms in your home.
“They truly are life-saving devices.”
