New manager says changes at Green Hotel will point business ‘back in the right direction’

The new boss at the Green Hotel Golf and Leisure Resort in Kinross has rejected rumours of widespread job losses.

Suggestions of redundancies swept the town after 65 staff were put on notice that their positions were under consideration.

General manager Kevin Keenan told The Courier that a small number of “middle managers” had been let go as part of a reorganisation of the business.

He denied, however, that the letters were the prelude to more significant job cuts and instead predicted a rebirth for the business.

Significant investment is to be made in the resort, which includes the Green Hotel, Windlestrae Hotel, two golf courses, Loch Leven Fisheries and the Bistro restaurant, in a bid to return it to its former glory.

Modernisation of the restaurant offering, bar facilities and function suite are all to take place in the coming months.

Mr Keenan, who managed the Macdonald Rusacks Hotel in St Andrews for six years, said he believed the resort needed “a bit of a shake-up” and was looking forward to the challenge.

“I’ve been here just four weeks but I’ve tried to hit the ground running and so there has been a bit of upheaval.

“The staffing structure here has, in my opinion, remained the same for far too long.

“We did send out 65 letters notifying staff that their positions were under consideration but that does not mean that they will be made redundant far from it.”

In all, he said he expected fewer than 10 employees to leave, while new members of staff have already been added to the team, including chef Anthony Sturge.

“There is a need to refresh the business and point it back in the right direction,” Mr Keenan said. “I have a lot of new ideas and I have been given the freedom to implement them by the owners.

“This used to be a real destination for people who wanted to eat well and a brilliant place to stay and I want it to be that again.

“In time I hope to see us update the restaurant and Jock’s Bar and our function suite so that we can reconnect ourselves with the wedding market.

“It’s about getting the hotel and resort back to what they used to be.

“We have a fantastic and varied offering here in Kinross and I want to see us make the most of it.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for me and I’m very excited by the project.”
