Better Perth to launch new bid to revitalise city centre
ByThe Courier Reporter
Campaign group Better Perth will launch a new bid to revitalise the city centre next month.
First Thursday events will kick off on December 3, offering late-night shopping and fun for customers.
The move has been backed by the city’s McEwens store, which will open late for only the second time in its 147-year history.
This is Better Perth’s first initiative to “drive a new energy and excitement” into the city. It is the brainchild of award-winning salon owner Charlie Taylor.
“First Thursday is really taking off and with shops like McEwens behind us, we can really create a buzz,” she said.
“We are starting with December, with tons of traders not just opening late but also putting together special treats for customers.
“There will be entertainers setting up shop in empty units to create some festive cheers.”
She added: “But this is just the beginning. We have amazing plans for the whole of next year that we hope will keep people shopping locally on the first Thursday of every month.”
McEwens managing director John Bullough said: “It’s exciting to be part of something that celebrates Perth.
“We can’t promise it will be quiet, though, there is so much going on.”
