A Perthshire hotel has been playing host to a group of prestige sports cars.

Dozens of vintage Bugattis, some dating back to the 1920s, descended on the Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry to celebrate a 50th anniversary rally.

Around 200 guests brought their cars from all over the world to attend the rally, which reflected on 50 years of vintage Bugatti rallies. One car which attended at the Atholl Place had previously been at a rally in 1963.

Original Bugattis are extremely rare as no more than 8,000 cars were ever made by Automobiles Ettore Bugatti, a French car manufacturer founded in 1909 in the then German city of Molsheim, Alsace, by the Italian Ettore Bugatti.

His death in 1947 proved to be the beginning of the end for Bugatti cars as his son Jean had died in 1939 and, with no successor, the marque became defunct in 1963.

In the 1990s an Italian entrepreneur revived Bugatti as a builder of limited production exclusive sports cars and today the name is owned by Volkswagen.

The Atholl Palace also laid on a whisky tasting experience for all the guests.

Colin Bullock of the Bugatti Club UK said: “It has been a very special rally for us this year, celebrating 50 years of holding these popular Bugatti rallies.

“We have had a fabulous time and I know that guests who have come from overseas have said how amazing it has been and how glad they are that they have attended in this stunning part of Scotland.”

He added: “We were happy for the local boy Dylan (Wilson) to see the cars. I think we made his day.”

The hotel is well used to hosting vintage car rallies in June and has hosted four, featuring Aston Martins and little-known Dutch marque Donkervoorts, throughout the month.

Gillian Gordon of the Atholl Palace said: “Seeing stunning vintage sports cars at Atholl Palace in June has become a common sight for us as we do seem to have built up a real experience in this market, looking after the car rally enthusiasts to the best of our ability.”
