A generous Perthshire woman has given local homeless people a boost by donating half her winnings from a recent competition.

Layla Barclay won a year’s supply of pies and, as there are only two people in her household, she decided to split the prize with those in need.

The competition was launched by Sugar and Spice bakery in Auchterarder at the end of last year to celebrate appearing on national television in Britain’s Best Bakery.

Layla walked away with the grand prize a year’s supply of world championship- winning Scotch Pies.

Layla said: “It’s such a generous prize and with only two of us we thought it would be a nice gesture to see if we could give some of our winnings to people more in need than we are.”

Having made their decision, Layla spoke to Claire Devlin from Sugar and Spice, who was delighted to be able to help.

Claire said: “Over the last few years we have worked with the Big Issue Scotland and some of the agencies they work with.

“We were happy to be able to bring Layla’s offer to their attention and we know that this means the pies will be going where they are most needed.”

Perth Big Issue vendor Eddie Lyons met Layla and headed to Auchterarder to receive the first instalment of the winnings.

Distribution manager for the Big Issue Scotland Anne MacKenzie said she was delighted for the vendors, who would be benefiting from the generosity of both Layla and Sugar and Spice.

She said: “It’s good to know that even in these hard times there are still people with generosity of spirit willing to help those less fortunate than themselves.”

Sugar and Spice featured on Britain’s Best Bakery in December and had the chance to showcase their signature Scotch pie, as well as millionaire shortbread.

Despite failing to go through to the next round, the bakery has since been inundated with orders from across the country.
