Police hunt lout who set fire to A9 speed camera near Dunkeld in act of ‘mindless vandalism’

The police are keen to trace a vandal who set fire to a speed camera on the A9.

The incident took place at around 7.15pm on Wednesday on the northbound carriageway of the Perth to Inverness road, about a half-mile south of Dunkeld.

Officers from Tayside Police’s western division have issued the description of a man seen in the vicinity of the camera and also a van spotted in the area around the same time.

As a result of the vandalism, the speed camera will need to be replaced.

Speed cameras on the A9 have been targeted before, with one being completely burnt out near the turn-off for Ballinluig several years ago.

A motorist, who asked to remain anonymous, yesterday hit out at the latest bout of vandalism.

”This speed camera has been burnt and this is mindless vandalism,” he said.

”It was probably a driver out for revenge after previously being caught.

”Speed cameras are there for a reason to deter speeding motorists.”

A spokesperson for Tayside Police said the Gatso speed camera was deliberately set on fire around 7.15pm.

”We received a report that the camera had been set on fire and was like charcoal,” she said.

”Tayside Fire and Rescue were contacted and they put the fire out.

”We are making inquiries into this and would like to trace a white courier-type van seen in the area at the time.

”We’d also like to speak to a man, who is described as being slim built, 5ft 6in in height, wearing a hooded top, who was seen acting suspiciously beside the speed camera.”

A spokesperson for Tayside Fire and Rescue confirmed that one appliance attended and that a hosereel jet was used to put out the fire to the speed camera.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 0300 111 2222.
