Sainsbury’s lodges Perth city centre plans

SAINSBURY’S HAVE lodged plans for a satellite store in Perth, with the promise of a jobs boost to the city.

The supermarket giants, who already have planning permission for a main store to be built in Crieff Road, Perth, aim to develop the vacant site at 199-205 High Street, in the city centre.

The plans, which were lodged this week with Perth and Kinross Council, detail the proposed building of a shop front and ATM at the satellite store.

The estimated cost of the development is not known, but it is understood that the store will be built over three floors.

Sainsbury’s have said the store will create around 25 new jobs if the plan is passed by the local authority.

Councillor Ian Miller, leader of Perth and Kinross Council, has previously described the proposed satellite store as “exciting news” for the city, adding: “I very much welcome the major boost this will give to Perth High Street our main shopping street.

“It will bring a new vibrancy to that part of the street by increasing footfall in the area and shows that Perth’s newly-restored status as a city is leading to increasing interest from major retailers.”

The proposed store has also been welcomed by Vicki Unite, of Perthshire Chamber of Commerce.

She said: “We are delighted that Sainsbury’s have secured the unit on the High Street.

“We hope that their investment in our city encourages more high quality stores to Perth.”

Christian Wakelin, Sainsbury’s senior acquisition manager, stressed that the store “underlines” the company’s commitment to Perth.

Perth and Kinross Council has already approved the Sainsbury’s plans for the proposed development of a 65,000 square foot store on the former site of Perth Mart in Crieff Road, Perth.

The company has claimed that the new store will create around 450 obs and benefit the community. It has also been working with the council on planned road improvements, which are essential prior to the development of the supermarket.
