MSP ‘very concerned’ by Davidsons Chemists job losses in Blairgowrie

Davidsons is planning to close its distribution and warehousing operation in Blairgowrie.
Davidsons is planning to close its distribution and warehousing operation in Blairgowrie.

BOSSES AT Davidsons Chemists have been challenged to defend their decision to cut 15 jobs in Blairgowrie.

Perthshire North MSP John Swinney has spoken out following the announcement that the company will close its warehousing and distribution operation in the town.

Scotland’s largest chain of independent pharmacies said it had taken the “difficult” decision as part of its long-term strategy for growth.

Managing director Allan Gordon believes that running its own distribution network can no longer be justified by the firm, which he believes can save up to £250,000 a year by outsourcing supply and delivery.

However, the announcement came at a time when plans are being announced to expand the company’s retail operation from 30 shops to around 50 nationwide over the next decade.

Mr Swinney said he found it “difficult to reconcile” the local cuts with the national expansion of the business.

“I was very concerned to hear of the decision taken by Davidsons Chemist to close its warehouse and distribution facility in Blairgowrie,” the MSP said.

“In a rural community, such as East Perthshire, this is a significant one-off job loss by a single company and I am very sorry that staff are having to deal with this difficult news.

“Davidsons is a major and valued company in the local area and I will be seeking a discussion with the company about its plans.

“I find it difficult to reconcile that, as Davidsons announce the expansion of their business operations, they feel it necessary to make such a significant number of staff redundant.

“The company has made clear this decision is to cut costs, but they are also reporting a very healthy profit at this time.

“It is vital that companies, whilst following the need to remain profitable, also bear in mind their commitment to local economies and local employees who have served them well.”

The business was founded in Blairgowrie by Walter Davidson in 1897 but has doubled in size over the last 15 years.

Staff members at the firm’s Welton Road premises have been issued with redundancy notices.

However, eight members of staff at the firm’s headquarters at Wellmeadow will be unaffected.
