A man arrested after a 21-year-old woman was seriously sexually assaulted on New Year’s Day has been released from custody pending further investigation.
The alleged attack happened in Edinburgh’s Canongate area in the early hours of January 1.
Police Scotland had said a 25-year-old man was arrested and charged, and was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.
The Crown Office later said that he did not appear.
A Crown Office spokesman said: “The Procurator Fiscal at Edinburgh received a report concerning a 25-year-old male in connection with an alleged incident on January 1 2014.
“After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the report, the accused was liberated from custody pending further investigation and did not appear in court.”
