A hidden camera uncovered by pupils in changing rooms at a sports centre was installed by a club over theft concerns.

Pupils at James Gillespie’s High School in Edinburgh raised the alarm after finding the camera while getting changed for a PE lesson at Meadowbank Sports Centre in the city on Wednesday. After investigating, Police Scotland said they are “satisfied no crime was committed”.

The force said: “Officers conducted thorough and comprehensive inquiries including analysis of the images recorded and are satisfied that it contained nothing untoward.

“The camera was in place for a legitimate crime prevention purpose and there was no intention to record anything that would constitute a crime.”

It is understood the camera was put in place at the centre by an external sports club concerned over a spate of thefts from the changing room.

The club normally removes the camera after each visit but had left it behind when it was discovered by the pupils.

Since the discovery, the club has been warned about the incident.

The changing area alternates between being used for males and females, and is used by members of the public attending the centre as well as school pupils.

An Edinburgh Leisure spokeswoman declined to name the club in question but stressed that lockers are available on the premises.

She added: “Edinburgh Leisure and relevant parties have been co-operating with Police Scotland on the incident. Following a thorough and comprehensive inquiry at Meadowbank Sports Centre, Police Scotland has concluded that no crime was committed.”

“Whilst this was an isolated incident we wish to reassure all our customers that all of our venues are safe and our staff remain committed that every person visiting any of our venues has the best customer experience.”
