Church of Scotland minister hails ‘milestone’ gay clergy vote

A clergyman has hailed a “historic” decision to move towards giving Church of Scotland congregations the freedom to appoint people in civil partnerships as their minister.
The Rev Scott Rennie, of Queen’s Cross Church in Aberdeen whose appointment in 2009 sparked the debate claimed the milestone was very wise and would allow the Kirk “to live and work together”.
The Church’s General Assembly backed a motion on Monday night after a six-hour debate.
Mr Rennie said: “The General Assembly has reached a considered position which affirms liberty for people of different theological traditions.
“This decision enables us to live and work together in unity to share the love of God in our different communities.
“There’s no doubt it’s a milestone because it is at last a recognition of the place of gay and lesbian people within the ministry and there are a number.”
