Hopes are fading for the survival of two divers missing on an expedition to explore a German seawreck.
The experienced divers failed to surface from a dive to the remains of SMS Brummer in Scapa Flow, Orkney, on Tuesday.
The skipper of their boat raised the alarm at about 5pm and a Coastguard and lifeboat search failed to find the two men, reportedly from the Netherlands.
A team of police divers made its way to the site on Wednesday night.
A police spokesman said: “The search was stood down for the night shortly after 8pm but further efforts to locate them will be made today. The missing divers have not yet been located and there are serious concerns for their well-being.”
SMS Brummer is a mine-laying cruiser scuttled after the First World War.
Scapa Flow was used as a Royal Navy base in both world wars and is now popular with divers because of the many relics from British and German naval history lying on the seabed.
